At this vast garbage dump on the outskirts of Sylhet in northeastern Bangladesh, the poor—mainly women—pick through the trash for any item of possible value. The ambience is apocalyptic: the overwhelming stench of rotting organic matter; the weak and sickly morning sun shining through the smoke and haze; everywhere the black kites—flying through the sky and around the heads of the people, and crowding the branches of the bare trees.
